Week 3, Post 2

Through this program, I found it somewhat difficult to adjust. I was use to a very different type of school setting which was based on individual learning, working and studying.  For example, the last time I did a group project was dating back to 2007! Near the end of these two years, I found it easier to do group projects, and a lot of this had to do with learning about my own personal preferences and how other personalities and their traits can work alongside me to not make group work as daunting as it use to be for me (someone who is a bit OCD with their work and independent).

Through this program,  I enjoyed having the ability to learn about all the programs that are used in legal setting. I developed greatly because of the hands on training that is offered with these programs as that is something you don't get, unless you are in a co-op university program.  With my daily work, I am always in and out of Teraview, Conveyancer, and Acumin (PC Law).  Without the element of hands on training, I would not be able to work easily through these or have the ability to quickly pick up new skills within these programs, without the background I now have in them.  To me, this was as real as it gets when it comes from transferring over classroom learned skills over to the real world of work in a legal setting.

To me,  I feel like it was great to be able to see what everyone else was doing on their work placements.  It was interesting to see how everyone was applying what they took from their two years in this program to the settings that they were in.  I also found it interesting reading other blogs that did not have to do with the area of law that I was currently focused in.  I think the benefit of blogging allows us to still be connected to the students we spent the last two years with.  However, I see a benefit in a report submission also as something to take time to reflect back on experiences and the program itself.

I felt extremely prepared to enter into my co-op position and did not have any nerves about it or my capabilities in applying what I have gained from this program and from my B.A.  My preparation allowed me to quickly pick up on the new area of real estate that I would be working in as a lot of it greatly related to the real estate we learned in class.  However, for my specific area of law which I will be focused in, I feel slightly unprepared only because it is something that was never taught in class.  To me, it almost feels like I will still be in school for the coming few months as I learn a whole new area of real estate!

I grew up only knowing the law, and only wanted to be involved with the law.  When I was in university my chosen path was law school.  When I started to study for the LSAT's I started to also look at my values as a person and what I wanted to accomplish in life, things I wanted to do, go, see, and overall what my future was going to look like in 5, 10, 15 years.  I realized that with roles I wanted to take such as volunteer roles that had a strong commitment to them and responsibility, as well as starting my career early so that I could have a family early, etc.  led me to realize that going to law school and being a junior associate and not really being established by when I wanted to be, meaning, when I wanted to start a family and accomplish roles in the community, was not the right choice for me.  That is why I decided that being a Law Clerk was the perfect role for me. Unfortunately, since university does not teach you the programs you need to know to be a Law Clerk, that lead me to go back to school and accomplish just that. I am excited for the role I now have, the job offer I signed, and the path that I can now follow that fits into everything that I wanted to and want to accomplish.

I am someone that at all times wants to have things done right, take pride in all that I do, and always find myself being a bit hard on myself to produce excellence in all that I do.  My dash of OCD also has me over work myself sometimes on projects, but in the end, they fit into my standard of excellence and the work that I want my name to stand behind. I expect myself to never rush, to always triple check work, to work alongside clients to meet their needs above and beyond what they expect, and to become a stand out and sought after Condominium Law Clerk in the KW region to work with. These standards have always been who I am and will be moving forward in my career.
